Andohahela Natural Reserve |
Location and physical description
The natural reserve of Andohahela is situated in the Province of Toliary (Tuléar) 40 km northeastward of Fort - Dauphin on the national Road n°13 from Tolagnaro to Amboasary, the road from Amboasary to Ihazofotsy. its Area is : 76 020 ha Specificities : existence of 3 different ecosystems in the park :
· humid Forest in its east part ,
· southern thorny Bush in the west part,
· An exceptional transitional forest between the 2 formations
The climate
On the east slope : hot and humid . annual average Temperature of 20 to 24°C. Annual Pluviometery of 1000 to 2000 mm. On the West slope: hot and dry . annual average Temperature of 22 to 26°C. Annual Pluviometery of 600 to 800 mm.
The flora
Type of Relief and vegetation : Mainly mountainous relief, humid dense forest, bush, transitional forest between the two precedent types. Biogeographicaly, Andohahela is the unique region where two types of vegetation which present the most difference in all the island can be discovered:
- the pluvial forest of the eastern region
- the thorny sub - arid bush of the western region Endemic of the region : Dypsis decaryi (trihedral palm tree )
The fauna
According to these 3 formations , the fauna and the flora considerably vary among others the lemurs, birds with a rate of endemicity of 65%, spectacular cascades, the different reptiles, the numerous species of amphibians.
- Diurnal species : Propithecus verreauxi verreauxi verreauxi, Eulemur fulvus collaris collaris, Hapalemur griseus meridionalis, Lemur @@catta
- Nocturnal species : Microcebus rufus, Microcebus murinus, Lepilemur mistelinus, Lepilemur leucopus, Cheirogaleus major, Avahi laniger, Daubentonia madagascariensis
